POLITICS AND GOVERNANCE OF INFRASTRUCTURES
Studying Indonesian Infrastructure: An STS School - Year 1
Monday-Saturday, 1 - 6 February 2027
Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya, Malang, East Java, Indonesia
Indonesia’s complex infrastructure landscapes require inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to examine them more holistically. Despite the involvement of engineering, natural, and social sciences in infrastructure development, academic engagement to study infrastructures remains siloed. There is a critical need for collaborative spaces to examine how infrastructure intersects with power, governance, and justice. This STS School provides participants with Science, Technology, and Society (STS) frameworks to evaluate infrastructures beyond technical metrics to promote sustained dialogue, interdisciplinary research, and critical engagement with infrastructure as a driver of social change.
The School is designed as a one-week on-site course in Malang once a year for three years, with each year dedicated to a specific thematic cluster. Each edition of the School combines two-day field visits with four-day classroom-based activities (including lectures, seminars, and hands-on workshops). This integrated format allows participants to connect conceptual discussions with real-world observations. Participants will be encouraged to link their own research to the yearly themes, engage across disciplines, and develop new perspectives on infrastructure as both a technical system and a social phenomenon. While the structure maintains conceptual continuity, participants can apply for specific years.
In the first year, the program focuses on the politics and governance of infrastructures, aiming to reveal their materiality and interconnections while analyzing their social and political dimensions. Topics open for exploration include, but are not limited to:
Proyek Strategis Nasional (PSN, National Strategic Projects)
International Development of Infrastructures
Disasters and Infrastructures
Urban-Rural Infrastructures
Water Governance
Infrastructures of Memory
ELIGIBILITY
This STS School is open to postgraduate students (master's and doctoral candidates) from all disciplines worldwide, with a very strong interest in or research focus on Indonesian infrastructures. Relevant fields include, but are not limited to, sociology, anthropology, geography, history, public policy, environmental science, environmental studies, urban planning, engineering, public health, development studies, science and technology studies, law, and human rights. To maintain high-quality mentorship, the cohort is strictly limited to 15 participants.
For participants residing outside of Malang, the School provides on-site accommodation in single occupancy rooms. While a restricted number of travel grants may be awarded to candidates with exceptional proposals and clear motivation, all prospective attendees are strongly urged to independently secure their own travel support to facilitate their participation in the School.
Although English is the primary language for classroom instruction, certain field informants may communicate exclusively in Bahasa Indonesia. Non-professional translation services will be available for participants who are not proficient in the local language. Consequently, a foundational understanding of Bahasa Indonesia is recommended to better comprehend the content and cultural nuances of the information presented by local informants.
